How to Calculate Sales Tax (Add or Back It Out of a Total)
Use the Sales Tax Calculator to add tax to a price or find the pre-tax price hidden inside a tax-included total, with worked examples.
To calculate sales tax, open the Sales Tax Calculator, choose Add tax to price or Price includes tax, enter the price (or total) and the Tax rate %, and read the result instantly — the tax amount and the other price are shown alongside it.
What the Sales Tax Calculator does
Sales tax math goes two directions, and only one of them is simple multiplication. Adding tax to a price is just price × rate. But if you only know the total you were charged — a receipt, an invoice, a price that already includes tax — finding the pre-tax price isn't the same calculation run backwards; dividing by the rate instead of multiplying is a common mistake. The Sales Tax Calculator handles both: Add tax to price takes a pre-tax price and a rate and gives you the tax and the total; Price includes tax takes a tax-included total and a rate and gives you the tax and the price before tax.
How to calculate sales tax with Toolbench
- Open the Sales Tax Calculator.
- Set Mode to Add tax to price if you're starting from a pre-tax price, or Price includes tax if you already have a total that includes tax.
- Enter the price. The field is labeled Price before tax in Add mode, or Total (incl. tax) in Price-includes-tax mode.
- Enter Tax rate % — the rate for your state or locality.
- In Add mode, read Total with tax as the main result, with Tax and Price before tax shown below it.
- In Price-includes-tax mode, read Price before tax as the main result, with Tax and Total shown below it.
- Click any value to copy it, or use Copy results to copy everything as plain text.
Example: adding tax to a price
The tool opens in Add mode with Price before tax 100 and Tax rate % 8.25:
| Price before tax | 100 |
| Tax rate % | 8.25 |
| Total with tax | 108.25 |
| Tax | 8.25 |
| Price before tax | 100.00 |
100 × 8.25% is 8.25 in tax, for a total of 108.25.
Example: backing tax out of a total
Switch to Price includes tax with a total of 1,080 and a tax rate of 8%:
| Total (incl. tax) | 1,080 |
| Tax rate % | 8 |
| Price before tax | 1,000.00 |
| Tax | 80.00 |
| Total | 1,080.00 |
Dividing 1,080 by 1.08 (not by 0.92, and not just subtracting 8%) gives the pre-tax price of 1,000.00, with the remaining 80.00 being the tax. This is the step people get wrong by hand — subtracting 8% of the total from the total doesn't undo adding 8% to the pre-tax price, because 8% of a bigger number is a bigger amount.
Why you can't just subtract the tax rate
| Starting point | Wrong approach | Wrong result | Correct result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total $1,080, rate 8% | $1,080 − 8% of $1,080 | $993.60 | $1,000.00 |
| Total $108.25, rate 8.25% | $108.25 − 8.25% of $108.25 | $99.32 | $100.00 |
The correct way to remove tax is to divide the total by 1 + rate/100, not to subtract rate% of the total. The Sales Tax Calculator's Price includes tax mode does this division for you.
Tips and common mistakes
- Pick the right mode first. If your number is a sticker price or subtotal, use Add tax to price. If it's a total you were actually charged (a receipt, a credit card charge), use Price includes tax.
- Don't subtract the tax rate to remove tax. As the table above shows, that undercounts the pre-tax price. Divide by
1 + rate/100instead — or just let the calculator do it. - Sales tax rates vary by state and locality in the US, and some goods and services are exempt or taxed differently — check your local rate rather than assuming one.
- Use more decimal places for the rate if your jurisdiction's combined rate isn't a round number (many US combined state + local rates aren't).

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate sales tax on a price?
Multiply the price by the tax rate as a decimal (rate ÷ 100), then add that amount to the price. The Sales Tax Calculator's Add tax to price mode does this for you and also shows the tax amount on its own.
How do I find the price before tax from a total?
Divide the tax-included total by 1 + rate/100. For example, a $1,080 total at an 8% tax rate works out to a $1,000.00 price before tax. Subtracting 8% of the total instead gives the wrong answer.
Why can't I just subtract the tax percentage from the total?
Because the tax percentage was originally calculated on the smaller, pre-tax price — not on the total. Subtracting that same percentage from the larger total removes too much. Dividing by 1 + rate/100 reverses the original calculation correctly.
Does the Sales Tax Calculator know my local tax rate?
No. It uses whatever rate you enter — it defaults to 8.25% but doesn't look up rates by location. Check your state or local tax authority for your exact combined rate.
Is my data sent to a server when I use the Sales Tax Calculator?
No. The calculation happens in your browser as you type. If you're signed in, your inputs sync privately to your account; if you're signed out, nothing is saved anywhere.
