How to Download YouTube Video Thumbnails
Paste any YouTube link to grab its thumbnail in five sizes, from 120×90 up to 1280×720, and download, copy the URL or save it to your gallery.
To download a YouTube video's thumbnail, paste the video's link into the YouTube Thumbnail Downloader and it instantly shows every size YouTube stores for that video — from a tiny 120×90 preview up to the full 1280×720 version — each with its own Download button.
What this tool actually does
YouTube doesn't store just one thumbnail image per video. Behind the scenes it keeps several resized versions at a handful of fixed filenames, and the YouTube Thumbnail Downloader pulls all of them at once. Paste in a youtube.com/watch?v=... link, a shortened youtu.be/... link, a Shorts, embed or live URL — or just the bare 11-character video ID itself — and the tool extracts the video ID and builds the five known thumbnail URLs for it directly from i.ytimg.com, YouTube's own image host.
There's nothing to configure and no video is uploaded anywhere: the tool just works out the ID from the text you pasted and loads images that already exist on YouTube's servers.
The five sizes it pulls
| Label | Dimensions | Filename on YouTube |
|---|---|---|
| Max resolution | 1280 × 720 | maxresdefault.jpg |
| Standard | 640 × 480 | sddefault.jpg |
| High | 480 × 360 | hqdefault.jpg |
| Medium | 320 × 180 | mqdefault.jpg |
| Default | 120 × 90 | default.jpg |
"Max resolution" only exists for videos that were originally uploaded in HD — if a video was uploaded at a lower resolution, that slot either falls back to a smaller image or doesn't load, while the other four sizes are generated for essentially every video.
How to download a YouTube thumbnail with Toolbench
- Open the YouTube Thumbnail Downloader.
- Paste the video's URL — any standard watch link, a
youtu.beshort link, a Shorts/embed/live link, or just the video ID — into the YouTube video URL or ID field. - The tool reads out the video ID and shows all five thumbnail sizes as soon as a valid ID is found. If it can't find one, it tells you: "Couldn't find a video ID in that link."
- For any size you want, click ↓ Download to save it straight to your device as a JPG.
- Click Copy URL to grab the direct
i.ytimg.comimage link instead of downloading the file. - If you're signed in, click + Gallery to save that thumbnail to your Toolbench gallery for later instead of downloading it immediately.
Worked example
Paste https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ (or just dQw4w9WgXcQ) and the tool extracts the video ID dQw4w9WgXcQ and lists:
- Max resolution — 1280 × 720 —
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/dQw4w9WgXcQ/maxresdefault.jpg - Standard — 640 × 480 —
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/dQw4w9WgXcQ/sddefault.jpg - High — 480 × 360 —
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/dQw4w9WgXcQ/hqdefault.jpg - Medium — 320 × 180 —
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/dQw4w9WgXcQ/mqdefault.jpg - Default — 120 × 90 —
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/dQw4w9WgXcQ/default.jpg
Clicking ↓ Download on the Max resolution tile saves the file as youtube-dQw4w9WgXcQ-maxresdefault.jpg. Every downloaded file follows that same youtube-<video-id>-<size-key>.jpg pattern, so you can always tell which video and size a saved file came from later.
Which link formats work
The tool recognizes a video ID inside any of these:
youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_IDyoutu.be/VIDEO_IDyoutube.com/shorts/VIDEO_IDyoutube.com/embed/VIDEO_IDyoutube.com/live/VIDEO_IDyoutube.com/v/VIDEO_ID- the bare 11-character video ID on its own
If none of these match, you'll see "Couldn't find a video ID in that link" — double-check you copied the full URL and not, say, a playlist or channel link.
Tips and common mistakes
- If Max resolution looks wrong or doesn't load, that's expected for some videos. It's only generated for HD uploads; older or lower-resolution videos may not have a true 1280×720 image at that slot.
- Download fails silently open the image instead. If fetching the file for download doesn't work, the tool automatically opens the image in a new tab so you can still save it manually (right-click → Save Image As).
- A playlist or channel URL won't work. The tool specifically needs a single video's link or ID — paste the individual video's URL, not the playlist it's part of.
- Saving to your gallery requires signing in. If you're signed out and click + Gallery, you'll be prompted to sign in first; downloading and copying the URL work either way, signed in or not.
- These are YouTube's own images, not ones this tool generates. The tool doesn't create or edit thumbnails — it just finds and lets you grab the ones YouTube already hosts for a video.

Frequently asked questions
Does this tool work with any YouTube video?
It works with any public video, since it builds thumbnail URLs straight from YouTube's own image host using the video ID. It recognizes standard watch links, youtu.be links, Shorts, embed and live links, or a bare video ID.
Why is the Max resolution thumbnail missing or low quality for some videos?
The 1280×720 "Max resolution" image is only generated for videos originally uploaded in HD. Older or lower-resolution uploads may not have a genuine high-resolution thumbnail at that slot, even though the other four sizes are still available.
Is the video uploaded or processed by this tool?
No. The tool only reads the video ID out of the link or ID you paste — nothing about the video itself is uploaded, viewed or processed. It simply builds the known thumbnail image URLs for that ID.
Can I get the direct image URL instead of downloading a file?
Yes. Click Copy URL on any size to copy its direct i.ytimg.com link without downloading anything.
Do I need an account to download thumbnails?
No. Downloading a thumbnail and copying its URL both work without signing in. An account is only needed if you want to save a thumbnail to your Toolbench gallery instead of downloading it right away.
