How to Generate Lorem Ipsum Placeholder Text
Generate lorem ipsum paragraphs, sentences or words with the free Lorem Ipsum Generator — optional classic opener, HTML paragraph tags, instant copy.
To generate lorem ipsum, open the Lorem Ipsum Generator, pick how many paragraphs, sentences or words you want, and copy the result — it's built from scrambled Latin-looking words in your browser, with options to start with the classic "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" opener and to wrap each block in HTML <p> tags.
What lorem ipsum is and why it's still used
Lorem ipsum is placeholder text descended from a scrambled passage of Latin, used in design and publishing for decades because it looks like real prose — varied word lengths, punctuation, sentence rhythm — without being readable, so it doesn't distract a reviewer from a layout, font choice or spacing decision. Designers, developers and anyone mocking up a page reach for it to fill text blocks before real copy exists.
How to generate lorem ipsum with Toolbench
- Open the Lorem Ipsum Generator.
- Type a number from 1 to 200 in the count box.
- Pick a unit: Paragraphs, Sentences or Words (Paragraphs is selected by default).
- Leave Start with "Lorem ipsum" on if you want the classic opener, or turn it off for a fully random draw.
- Turn on Wrap in
<p>if you need each paragraph wrapped in HTML tags for a mockup. - Click ↻ Regenerate to redraw the random words with the same count, unit and toggles.
- Click Copy, or use Send to → to send the output straight to another tool.
The status line above the output always shows the running word and character count, so you know exactly how much text you're about to paste.
What each unit actually generates
| Unit | What you get |
|---|---|
| Paragraphs (default) | count paragraphs, each made of 4 to 6 randomly generated sentences |
| Sentences | count sentences, each 8 to 17 words long |
| Words | One block of exactly count words |
Longer sentences aren't flat strings of words — any sentence that comes out longer than 11 words gets a comma inserted near its middle, so you get a mix of simple one-clause sentences and longer two-clause ones, the way real paragraphs read.
Start with "Lorem ipsum" behaves a little differently per unit:
- In Words mode, the block opens with as much of "lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" as fits in your count, then fills the rest with random words up to the total you asked for.
- In Sentences mode, the first sentence is replaced outright with the classic "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit." — the rest stay random.
- In Paragraphs mode, only the first sentence of the first paragraph becomes the classic sentence; every other sentence and paragraph is random.
Turn the toggle off and every word, in every unit, is drawn at random.
Example: the default output
With the defaults — count 3, unit Paragraphs, "Start with Lorem ipsum" on, "Wrap in <p>" off — the first paragraph looks like this:
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ex sed exercitation et do ex amet, nostrud sint magna tempor dolor. Irure cupidatat aliqua incididunt velit consequat sint, tempor nulla nisi sint laborum. Excepteur do ad exercitation et do pariatur aute elit dolore. Reprehenderit culpa labore laborum nulla nostrud aliqua esse.
Two more paragraphs follow, separated by a blank line, for a status line reading 187 words · 1,233 characters. Click Regenerate and you'll get a different random draw of words with the same three-paragraph structure and the same classic opening sentence.
Example: a short block of words
Switch the unit to Words and set the count to 8, with "Start with Lorem ipsum" on:
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet reprehenderit lorem commodo.
The first five words are the fixed opener; the last three are random, filling the block out to exactly 8 words.
Tips and common mistakes
- Use "Wrap in
<p>" when the output is going straight into HTML. Without it, paragraphs are separated by a blank line, which works for plain text and most CMS editors but won't render as separate paragraphs in raw HTML. - Turn off "Start with Lorem ipsum" if a reviewer keeps recognizing the classic opener. A fully random draw still reads like Latin placeholder text but skips the familiar first line.
- Regenerate before you commit to a mockup — the word selection is random, so clicking it a few times gives you different sentence lengths and rhythm to test a layout against.
- 200 is the cap per unit, whether you're generating paragraphs, sentences or words — generate it once, then copy or send it to another tool to reuse.

Frequently asked questions
Is lorem ipsum real Latin?
No. It's derived from a scrambled passage of Latin text, which is why individual words look Latin but the passage as a whole doesn't translate into coherent sentences.
Does the Lorem Ipsum Generator send my settings to a server?
No. The text is generated entirely in your browser from your count, unit and toggle choices. If you're signed in, your settings sync privately to your account; signed-out visitors have nothing saved anywhere.
What's the most placeholder text I can generate at once?
Up to 200 — of paragraphs, sentences or words, depending on which unit you've selected. Click Regenerate to get fresh random text at the same count.
Will clicking Regenerate change my count or unit?
No. Regenerate only redraws the random words; your count, unit, and the "Start with Lorem ipsum" and "Wrap in <p>" toggles stay exactly as you set them.
Can I generate placeholder text without the classic opener?
Yes. Turn off "Start with Lorem ipsum" and every word in the output, including the first one, is drawn at random.
